How many people do we know who don't like contemporary dance because they don't understand it, because it's ugly, or because it's just rolling around on the floor, among so many other clichés? To fully enjoy something it's necessary to connect with the experience, and for that, it's important to know where to focus our attention, so that the mind doesn't encounter many obstacles when interpreting what's before our eyes. That's the question: where do we focus our attention? How do we look at dance? How many ways are there? Where should I look –or stop looking– for beauty, emotion, or surprise? Should I even bother?
This workshop–discussion is aimed at people interested in dance or performing arts who are curious to understand the why’s that move the dancer and that allows us to enjoy the body in motion. By viewing short dance pieces –either live or on video– we create a shared space for reflection, open to any observation, question, or curiosity. We use the works to spark debate about the clichés and biases that influence our perceptions of the performing arts.
