How many people do we know who don't like contemporary dance because they don't understand it, because it's ugly, or because it's just rolling around on the floor, among so many other clichés? To fully enjoy something it's necessary to connect with the experience, and for that, it's important to know where to focus our attention, so that the mind doesn't encounter many obstacles when interpreting what's before our eyes.

That's the question: where do we focus our attention? How do we look at dance? How many ways are there? Where should I look –or stop looking– for beauty, emotion, or surprise? Should I even bother?

This workshop–discussion is aimed at people interested in dance or performing arts who are curious to understand the why’s that move the dancer and that allows us to enjoy the body in motion. By viewing short dance pieces –either live or on video– we create a shared space for reflection, open to any observation, question, or curiosity. We use the works to spark debate about the clichés and biases that influence our perceptions of the performing arts.

LITTLE STRATEGIES AGAINST HUMAN PHYSICS

LITTLE STRATEGIES AGAINST HUMAN PHYSICS

Contemporary dance workshop

Direction: Diego Pazó & Lucía Burguete

Length and size of the group: variable depending on needs

Language: English or Spanish

"The laws of physics dictate that we are constantly falling toward the Earth's core, but they also tell us that the Earth pushes us outward with the same force. They assure us of the perpetuation of movement, but the world is full of forces that prevent such a thing. The mind, too, falls to its own center and is simultaneously expelled, and it too tends toward inertia if its trajectory is not altered."

LITTLE STRATEGIES AGAINST HUMAN PHYSICS is a contemporary dance workshop designed to place the dancer in situations of conflict with gravity, the support of the ground and other bodies, and with what is easy or organic, both physically and mentally.

Using various technical exercises, movement guidelines, repertoire material from the company, and improvisation exercises, we will seek to facilitate the malleability of the body –bones, muscles, tendons, emotions, presence– bringing together technique, imagination, and intuition.

We propose a challenging environment where we can train our attention, our commitment to the ideas that are proposed at the studio, and the development of our intelligence and emotionality. Small strategies aimed for building a body capable of defying the laws of physics.

This project originated by initiative of TRY Dance Program, an educational initiative in Lucca, Italy. In addition to TRY, we have conducted this workshop in other international contexts, such as the Malta Dance Festival, the Dança em Trânsito Festival, and the University of Vigo.
